Description

This is the fifth edition of a comprehensive, clinically-focused textbook on the muscle biopsy. It covers the general approach to evaluating the muscle biopsy, broad classification of neuromuscular disorders, and specific muscle diseases. The previous edition was published in 2013.

Purpose

This book aims to teach a practical approach to the evaluation of the muscle biopsy. The intent is also to provide succinct and up-to-date information on a broad range of muscle diseases.

Audience

Muscle biopsy is most useful for the practicing neuropathologist, neuropathologist-in-training, or pathology resident. However, it can also be used as a resource for non-neuropathologists, such as neuroscientists and neurologists.

Features

The first seven chapters are devoted to an overview of the procedure of the muscle biopsy, the routine histologic and histochemical methods of assessing a biopsy, the characteristics of normal muscle, and an overall approach to the muscle biopsy. The remaining 16 chapters cover specific muscle diseases grouped by etiology. Individual diseases are described succinctly, usually over two to three pages that briefly review clinical features, histopathological features, and molecular genetics.

Assessment

This is an up-to-date and concise reference that is an excellent first resource for neuropathologists and trainees approaching muscle biopsies. It provides an excellent overview of both common and uncommon muscle diseases encountered in neuromuscular pathology. The text is approachable, has many high-quality images, and is supplemented by clear and informative tables. This is one of the most practical muscle pathology textbooks and is a must-have for practicing and training neuropathologists. It would be a great addition to a personal or departmental library.
