Description
This soft bound collection describes problems faced by the provider managing pleural disease.
Purpose
Presented in case management format, the book summarizes typical interactions between the clinical team and patients.
Audience
The interactive format makes this clinical case series attractive for both senior medical students and junior clinical trainees in pulmonology, critical care, radiology, and emergency medicine. The editors and contributors represent academic medical centers in North America, India, and Western Europe.
Features
Twenty-one chapters, each in the form of a case presentation, are organized into three groups. Initial chapters describe presentation of typical malignant pleural disease while infectious considerations are emphasized in the second group of cases. The third and final group of cases describe less common problems including thromboembolic disease, heart failure, and bullous disease with pleural complications of COPD. After the initial case presentation with history and physical examination findings, interaction between pulmonary specialists and thoracic surgical providers is presented using cartoon characters to highlight necessary management decisions. Relevant imaging including plain radiographs, ultrasound, and CT images are presented as the case presentation proceeds. At the conclusion of each case discussion, key teaching points along with a summary of the relevant pathology are presented.
Each chapter includes a small number of references gathered from key journals selected to provide an overview of management strategy and procedural interventions. The table of contents groups chapters as summarized above and attributes authorship while a concluding subject index includes separate citations for text boxes containing teaching points and other illustrations.
Online material including imaging effectively complements the text matter.
Assessment
This compact reference provides a user-friendly tool that allows readers rapid access to the scope of pleural disease, including the key aspects of history, examination, imaging, and management of both benign and malignant pleural problems. This is a wonderful tool for students and junior postgraduate trainees encountering this important group of chest health concerns.
