This is the third edition of an in-depth and comprehensive evaluation of neoplastic and nonneoplastic pulmonary histopathology using a morphological pattern-based approach. Its accompanying ebook provides additional slide images with zoom capability and self-assessment questions for most chapters. Part of the Pattern Recognition Series, the previous edition was published in 2011.

Purpose

The intent is to provide a practical and collective guide to neoplastic and nonneoplastic lung conditions divided among six primary general morphological patterns, with secondary key morphological findings, to achieve the most accurate diagnosis with an informed differential.

Audience

The book is intended to direct both training and attending general and pulmonary pathologists in the evaluation of morphological patterns of pulmonary pathology. The contributors are recognized experts in their fields of study

Features

Each of the six major histological patterns is briefly introduced, guiding readers to the appropriate chapters and specific pages for further evaluation. The first four introductory chapters illustrate important aspects of lung disease including lung anatomy, specimen processing, radiological lung correlation and pulmonary function testing, a topic new to this edition. Each of the remaining 17 chapters provides succinct, yet descriptive text complemented by a plethora of quality low- and high-power images, informative captions, and well-placed tables. Many of the chapters include gross, cytopathological, and radiological images that improve clinicopathological correlation. The index is well organized and, like the book, comprehensive. The appendix contains a special “visual encyclopedia” of images of unique findings and artifacts.

Assessment

This is a superb book for all practicing pathologists, general or specialized. Although it covers a wide breadth of pulmonary pathological diagnoses, the text and images, including pictures and tables, are equally balanced. The new chapter illustrating pulmonary function testing is a welcome addition. The pattern-based approach of this pathology book is excellent in assisting readers in developing accurate differential diagnoses. This is a first-class resource for both residents and fellows during previewing and is a worthwhile book for attending pathologists to use during sign-out.
