Description
This book is one of few references on fillers for aesthetic enhancement that discusses off-label uses. It also provides excellent discussions on treating complications, especially the dreaded vascular necrosis. This fifth edition is a welcome update, as new injection techniques and indications have arisen since the previous version was published in 2018.
Purpose
The purpose of the book is to teach dermatologists how to perform cosmetic procedures with tissue fillers correctly. The book accomplishes its objective.
Audience
The intended audience for this book is dermatologists.
Features
The ebook version includes many videos demonstrating injection techniques, which vary in educational value. Adding narration to the videos would be beneficial.
In addition, some of the auditory features in a few of the videos are unclear (e.g., the sound fades in and out as the speaker discusses their injection technique). Standardizing the videos would also be helpful. Often, the injectors begin injecting without discussing the judgment/decision process involved in determining the appropriate entry point for inserting the cannula.
Assessment
I appreciate how the book discusses different types of tissue fillers, indications for choosing a particular filler over another, and differences in physical properties. The book is clearly based on expert injector experience and the information is more valuable than a mere summary of the latest studies on the subject. Dermatologists will benefit from reading this book regardless of their level of expertise in tissue fillers.
