Description

This book is the updated edition of a comprehensive anesthesiology text that approaches anesthetic planning and management from the context of different disease states in the presenting patient. Sections with significant updates in this edition include valvular heart disease, pediatric and obstetric diseases, and a completely new chapter on chronic pain. There is an accompanying eBook, which is searchable, has figures and images broken out from text, as well as links to cited resources.

Purpose

This book aims to provide a concise guide to the pathophysiology and perioperative management of a wide variety of disease states. This is a needed objective in the ever-evolving practice of anesthesiology and with the increasing medical complexity of patients presenting for surgery. The online version enhances the ability for quick access to specific sections, which augments the real-world value of the text for working anesthesiologists.

Audience

The intended audience is the advanced learner (resident or fellow) or practicing anesthesiologist taking care of complex patients presenting with medical diseases. Each chapter is written by experts in the relevant areas of medicine and anesthesiology and the book as a whole is easy to understand for those with foundational knowledge of anesthesia and medicine.

Features

This book is comprised of 32 chapters, each focusing on a different disease state, e.g., valvular heart disease or infectious disease. Each chapter has various subsections regarding specific diseases. The subsections generally begin with a discussion of pathophysiology and diagnosis of the condition and include relevant diagrams and clinical images that should be readily understandable to any practicing physician or trainee with the requisite basic knowledge of the topic. Following the more general discussion is a guide to how perioperative management and decision-making are impacted by the disease state. Chapters end with key points – a few bullet points that are the intended take-away message of the chapter. The table of contents and glossary make it easy to find a needed topic.

Assessment

This book has a wide breadth comparable to any of the foundational texts in anesthesiology or medicine. The perioperative considerations in this text are the core of what sets it apart from other similarly detailed books about medical disease, and the depth of discussion of medical disease is different from other works on anesthesiology. The book is easy to understand and useful for any anesthesiology practitioner or learner taking care of complex medical patients. Importantly, the eighth edition includes a chapter on chronic pain, which was a subject completely lacking in prior editions, and updates to diseases in both the pediatric and pregnant patient.
