Description  

This is the third edition of the genitourinary volume in the popular Diagnostic Pathology series. It is a comprehensive reference and atlas for diseases involving the genitourinary tract. The previous edition was published in 2016. 

Purpose  

The purpose of this book is to provide a comprehensive written and photographic description of epithelial and frequent mesenchymal lesions involving the genitourinary tract. 

Audience  

This book is intended for a broad audience of pathologists who might encounter genitourinary lesions in daily practice. This would include genitourinary and surgical pathologists. Oncologists and urologists would also find this book to be of value. Residents and fellows with an interest in GU pathology would also profit from this excellent reference. 

Features  

This book is divided into five main sections according to anatomic site (kidney, urinary tract, prostate gland/seminal vesicle, testis/paratesticular structures, penis/scrotum). The first portion of each section establishes relevant background information such as anatomy, grading, staging, familial syndromes, and grossing/frozen section issues. The sections are then subdivided into specific entities. These typically include nonneoplastic, benign, premalignant (i.e., dysplasia), and malignant tumors. This updated third edition includes many of the novel tumors that have recently been published in the literature. The book maintains the outline format that is characteristic of the series. The most important aspects of the tumor are typically presented in an introduction. Following this, the tumor is described in more detail by terminology, epidemiology, clinical presentation, treatment, prognosis, gross features, microscopic features, ancillary tests (immunohistochemistry and genetics), and differential diagnosis. Numerous accompanying images are included for each entity addressed. 

Assessment   

This book is an excellent reference for the field of GU pathology. In particular, the diagnosis of renal malignancies has become much more complex and a comprehensive atlas resource is invaluable when a pathologist encounters an unusual renal tumor. The systemic and outline format makes it amenable for use as a quick reference both at the microscope and in the frozen section room. 

This book should be considered a core title in any (pathology) departmental or medical library. Pathologists and pathology trainees who desire a comprehensive and timely reference will find this work to be highly valuable.
