Description

This book is a second edition volume in the Foundations of Diagnostic Pathology series. The previous edition was published in 2009.

Purpose

The purpose of this book is to provide a “day-to-day” resource of bone and soft tissue lesions for practicing surgical pathologists and trainees. This second edition includes a substantial update of advances in ancillary tests (such as genetics and molecular testing) for classifying bone and soft tissue tumors.

Audience

This book is intended for a broad audience of pathologists who might encounter bone and soft tissue tumors in their daily practice. Given that these entities can occur in any site of the body, the audience includes virtually all anatomic pathologists and pathology trainees. Moreover, orthopedic and radiology residents will find this text valuable for its robust but concise summary of mesenchymal tumors.

Features

The first chapter of this book provides an overview of the background clinical and imaging characteristics of bone and soft tissue tumors. It also covers an approach to staging and grading tumors. The second chapter discusses the basic science and pragmatic utilization of ancillary testing (e.g., immunohistochemical stains and molecular testing) for diagnosing mesenchymal tumors. Following these first two chapters, the first half of the book discusses soft tissue tumors, while the second half addresses bone tumors.

These chapters are arranged by phenotypic differentiation (i.e., myofibroblastic, adipocytic, vascular). The chapters typically describe clinical findings, pathologic (gross/microscopic) findings, ancillary (immunohistochemistry, genetic) studies, differential diagnosis, and prognosis/therapy. Following the description of an entity, key features are summarized in a bullet point table. The second portion of the book covers bone tumors. The entities are described in a similar format and also incorporate key radiologic findings. The images are numerous and excellent in quality.

Assessment

This book is an excellent addition to the field of bone and soft tissue pathology. It concisely summarizes a highly dynamic and complex set of tumors in a manner that is understandable to physicians from diverse set of backgrounds. Pathologists and clinicians will find this book particularly useful when encountering a rare bone or soft tissue tumor. It is also ideal for residents who are taking a bone/soft tissue pathology elective. This book is a highly beneficial purchase for any personal, hospital, or departmental library.
