Description

This is the third edition of a book on the development and disease of the female genital tract as well as gestation-associated development and disease. The previous edition was published in 2011.

Purpose

The aim is to provide a comprehensive book on gynecologic and obstetric pathology. This edition is current with respect to developing terminology as well as molecular biology and genetics. It is formatted in well-organized text and easy-to-read tables, supplemented by numerous images.

Audience

The audience is practicing pathologists and pathology trainees. It is organized by organ and disease type, allowing readers to use it as a desk reference to target a specific disease of interest, but it is also a comprehensive book that should be used to round out one’s knowledge of gynecologic and obstetric pathology. This multiauthored book is written by expert pathologists and clinicians from around the world.

Features

The book begins with female genital tract development and associated disorders. Subsequent chapters are dedicated to the vulva, cervix, uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries. It is rounded out with placental development and gestation-associated disease processes. Each chapter begins with an outline and ends with a summary of key points. Chapters are composed of terminology, epidemiology, clinical information and management recommendations, diagnostic criteria, and a discussion of the differential diagnoses, accompanied by numerous high-quality figures and tables. Updates since the last edition include advances in molecular biology and genetics of gynecologic lesions, as well as new information which leads to reclassification of tumors or simply clarify old conundrums.

Assessment

Like previous editions, this one is a comprehensive resource that covers clinical and histological presentation of disease as well as expected management plans. Access to this book will help pathologists make correct diagnoses on a day-to-day basis and keep them up to date on the potential impact their diagnoses will have on patient management. Dreaded pitfalls are discussed by expert pathologists and complex terminology is clarified. This is an excellent resource for any pathologist who wants to stay relevant in the evolving field of gynecologic and obstetric pathology.
