Description

Like its predecessors, this fourth edition comprehensively covers all facets of airway management from the basics to the most advanced tools and techniques. The previous edition was published in 2012 and this update includes new chapters on the development of airway management plans, approaches to the induction of general anesthesia, airway management outside the operating room, and airway research. This edition also includes access to an ebook version as well as videos.

Purpose

The purpose is to cover the growing range of techniques, tools, and circumstances encountered in the management of straightforward and difficult airways. As the amount of material has grown, so has the value of an electronic version as the size of the book makes it harder to carry around. In addition, the videos are clear and serve as effective supplements to the descriptions in the book.

Audience

This is a well-written and well-edited collection of chapters written by the world’s experts on the wide range of tools, techniques, and management needs of those managing airways both in and out of the operating room. Anesthesiologists, emergency department physicians, and critical care providers at all levels of training, from medical students to seasoned faculty, will find the book an essential resource.

Features

There are a number of things that distinguish this book. The list of authors and contributors reads like a who’s who of airway experts. The chapters are clearly written and easy to read. The images, in both the print and online versions, are sharp and serve the needs of the book very effectively. In short, the book covers the topic of airway management from basic anatomy to routine and then difficult airway management through planning extubation in comprehensive detail. No aspect of airway management is left unaddressed.

Assessment

This remains an essential book for anyone involved in airway management. It provides an unequalled foundation for the neophyte, while offering insights from experts that even experienced practitioners will benefit from. It is the most comprehensive book on the topic currently available.
