This second edition of a comprehensive book on normal and abnormal ultrasound findings in obstetrics includes access to an ebook version. The previous edition was published five years ago.

Purpose

The purpose is to provide examples and descriptions for a comprehensive/exhaustive list of obstetric anomalies. The book is clear and well written and the website is easy to navigate.

Audience

The book is written for physicians who practice obstetric ultrasound, although any learner would benefit given the ease of reading style. The authors are some of the most respected clinicians in the field.

Features

The book is broken down by location of lesion. For example, sections on thorax, kidney, and CNS are all grouped together. This certainly helps busy clinicians because if they observe an anomaly in a given fetal body part, they can quickly reference the book for information on the differential diagnosis, prognosis, and potential therapies. I have used the first edition often in my clinical practice, so I was excited to see the second edition and it doesn’t disappoint.

Chapters are easy to read and, importantly, images are easy to understand and compare and contrast. There is even a chapter on the rare Walker-Warburg syndrome, which I have to give the authors credit for including. The chapter on soft markers could have included a table on the likelihood ratios for the different markers, but that’s a small point in an otherwise definitive book.

Assessment

This is an excellent book and one that should be on the shelf in every maternal-fetal medicine office. It is comprehensive yet easy to read. Chapters are well thought out and organized by disorder, making it easy to locate the topic of interest.
