Description

This fourth edition of an atlas of gynecological pathology contains multiple updates as well as a companion website. The previous edition was published in 2014.

Purpose

This book serves as a multipurpose resource for a wide variety of users practicing gynecological pathology. It provides a high-yield information on numerous gynecological neoplasms and diseases. The book focuses on commonly encountered lesions but also contains information on rare lesions. The bullet point format serves as a useful quick reference for specific questions/content while reviewing cases in real time.

Audience

This book will be of use to a wide variety of individuals including general pathologists, pathology residents and fellows, and subspecialty gynecological pathologists.

Features

The 20 chapters cover topics including the vulva, vagina, uterine cervix, uterine corpus, ovary, and peritoneum. The beginning of each chapter provides a brief overview by summarizing the headings, so that its contents can be appreciated quickly. Each disease entity is highlighted with an easy to read header. It is then described using a bullet point format including clinical presentation, gross presentation (often with gross images), microscopic description, ancillary testing, and differential diagnosis. Some entities have additional information regarding potential pitfalls, and what to look for in those instances. The book has outstanding, high-quality, high-resolution images that represent well the disease entity. In general, for each entity multiple microscopic images are provided to illustrate the morphological spectrum.High-yield immunohistochemical stains are also provided. Each figure is annotated and provides high-yield content.

Assessment

This is great a resource for all pathologists to use at the microscope while reviewing cases. The bulleted point format makes for quick reference and quick understanding of different pathological entities. Moreover, the numerous high-quality microscopic images allow readers to easily flip through and “picture match” during difficult cases. Additionally, the gross photos help provide microscopic and gross correlations. The book also serves as a great review resource for board and recertification exams. This up-to-date resource compiles high-yield facts about each disease entity. This updated edition is a useful book for multiple audiences, including pathologists in training, general pathologists, and subspecialty gynecological pathologists. It is highly recommended for every pathology department and/or personal library.
