Description  

This book is a comprehensive reference-format two-volume set authored by internationally recognized neurosurgeons in spine surgery. The quality and details of information make it a must-have book for all trainees and practicing spine surgeons. The wealth of material encompasses all aspects of spine surgery from both non-surgical and surgical aspects, and it could answer all questions that come up during practice and as a guide for managing patients and choosing best approaches for surgery. This represents an update from the fourth edition, with the primary updated material focusing on the role of endoscopic, minimally invasive, as well as robotic surgery development in spine surgery. There are also updates and interactive features and graphics in the online version, which accompanies the book. 

Purpose  

The book aims to provide an A-Z reference for spine disorders and surgical approaches to these conditions. Given the clarity and diversity of material in multiple levels of expertise from basic anatomy to novel approaches in spine surgery, it addresses multiple levels of audience from trainees to those with many years of practicing experience. Nevertheless, the most appropriate target of this book is trainees in more advanced years of training and surgeons in spine practice, both in the orthopedic and neurosurgical fields. In-depth discussion of topics from various views, an evidence-based presentation of material, and step-by-step information and illustration about surgical cases makes it a very reliable and useful source of information for the targeted audience. The chapter authors and editors are well-known experts in the field of spine surgery on an international level with many years of research and practice. 

Features  

The chapters on deformity and biomechanics provide a thorough discussion in an easy-to-understand format. Excellent illustrations, graphics, and real radiological images make the concepts of biomechanics easy to follow. The relation between these parameters and various spine conditions is discussed in depth and the importance of the aim of surgery in the correction of the parameters is presented in clarity. Furthermore, the anatomical consideration and post-operative care in this topic are well discussed and a wealth of information is available through the chapters. The flow chart diagrams and summary tables are very useful and unique features of this book. Take-home points provided by experts in each chapter are a quick and invaluable reference for everyday practice. 

Assessment   

This book is a must-have and a gold standard in textbooks on spine surgery. Compared to previous editions, there are multiple updates with new guidelines and research, especially in regard to the minimally invasive, novel, and robotic approaches. Therefore, the update’s new set of figures and online materials make it a very worthwhile update and edition. Compared to other textbooks, the thoroughness, variety of information and resources, and in-depth expert discussion of topics is unique, making it a must-have reference book for spine surgery.
