Description
This book is a standard reference text on breast diseases. The previous version was published in 2017, and rapid advances in the field amply justify this new sixth edition. Purchase of the print book includes access to an electronic version, which is fully searchable and annotatable, and includes selected videos.
Purpose
According to the editors, the purpose of the book is “not only [to] serve as a resource for residents, private practitioners, clinical faculty and researchers,” but also to provide a solid foundation of knowledge. These are worthy objectives, and the book fulfills a real need, as it has in previous editions.
Audience
The book is primarily intended for specialists, including surgical oncologists, breast and general surgeons, medical oncologists, and trainees in these fields.
It amply meets the needs of this intended audience. The editors are all internationally recognized authorities in the field and have recruited a stellar group of contributors.
Features
The book follows a conventional sectional organization, with several chapters on history (including one on important recent clinical trials), anatomy and physiology, epidemiology and genetics, screening, and benign and premalignant diseases. An extensive section on survivorship concludes the volume. This last section includes often-overlooked topics such as fertility preservation, management of menopause, and lifestyle interventions. Even the front pages are used to instruct, with an illustration of Michelangelo’s Night and historical commentary on its depiction of breast cancer. The ebook significantly augments the resources in the paper copy by providing portability, searchability, the ability to annotate, and carefully edited videos.
Assessment
This high-quality book continues to set the standard by which others will be judged. It is comprehensive, balanced, and carefully edited. This sixth edition provides updates and significant new material and amply justifies replacing the previous version.
