Description

Written by clinical leaders in the brain injury medicine field, this board review book is a survey of topics tested on the brain injury medicine board exam. It provides concise and practical information, including appropriate tables and illustrations. There are well-written practice test questions at the end of each chapter and online.

Purpose

The purpose of the book is to prepare physician candidates for the brain injury medicine board exam offered by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. This board review book is a needed addition to brain injury medicine test preparation. It meets its objective to provide up-to-date, practical knowledge that is both testable and clinically relevant.

Audience

This book is written for physician candidates of the brain injury medicine boards. It is also a helpful reference for any clinician involved in the medical care and rehabilitation of brain injury patients. Its content and practice questions are useful in test preparation. The authors comprise brain injury medicine clinicians and academicians across the country who are authorities in the field.

Features

This board review book presents topics covered in the brain injury medicine board exam as listed by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. It provides eight sections and 62 chapters in 385 pages. The best aspect of this board review book is its breadth of information across all aspects of the field. It covers brain anatomy and physiology, injury patterns and severity, management across various care settings, medical complications, and rehabilitation topics. It uses colorful illustrations and neuroimaging to support concepts. It provides well-written practice questions for each chapter with explanations of the answer choices. Overall, I highly recommend this board review book. Additional features that might be helpful are high-yield facts bookmarked in the margins. Another recommendation is to use tables for all lists of medications, especially in the neuropharmacology chapter. More practice questions would help with exam preparation and reinforcement of high-yield concepts. Minor grammatical errors are present.

Assessment

As a candidate for the brain injury medicine board exam, I intend to thoroughly utilize this study guide and its practice questions in my exam preparation. It stands apart from existing board review books in its quality and breadth of topics.
