Description

This is an authoritative treatise that provides up-to-date coverage of a full range of bleeding and clotting disorders. The comprehensive information provided on hemostasis and thrombosis includes deep venous thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, hypercoagulability, thrombocytopenia, von Willebrand disease, to name a few.

Purpose

Since the third edition was published almost five years ago, several advances have been reported in the development of new therapies and approaches to the treatment of several hemostatic and thrombotic disorders. Thus, the main purpose of bringing out this edition with new authors is to provide this new and updated information.

Audience

The book is intended primarily for clinicians and medical students who are interested in keeping well informed, yet face the challenge of updating themselves about the latest innovations in hemostatic and thrombotic disorders and understanding how these are best incorporated into clinical practice

Features

This comprehensive book is well conceived, well organized, and well presented. The 41 chapters are grouped into six parts that are differentiated by color-coded tabs. Each chapter is well thought out and well presented with sufficient tables and illustrations, boxed items that are highlighted by color, and impressive bibliographies. Part I, written by some of the book authors themselves, gives basic information in two chapters on the consultative process and a systematic approach to the bleeding patient. The boxed items in chapter 1 are noteworthy. Part II covers hemorrhagic processes such as hemophilia A & B, acquired coagulation disorders, von Willebrand disease, immune thrombocytopenia, and hereditary disease. This part also includes an interesting discussion of the crosstalk between inflammation and coagulation. Part III covers the thrombotic processes. More specifically, it has chapters on the clinical and laboratory assessment of thrombophilia, its pediatric aspects, venous thromboses, antiplatelet therapy, and complement-mediated coagulation disorders. The chapters in part IV, on disease pathophysiology and diagnosis, describe therapeutic agents including devices. Part V includes three chapters that deal with issues specific to women that cover the thrombotic risk of contraceptive and other hormonal therapies during pregnancy. The final part includes the last eight chapters that discuss special issues such as surgery and hemostasis, coagulopathy of liver diseases, central nervous system diseases, injury, paradoxical embolic stroke, and sickle cell disease.

Assessment

Written by leading experts in the field practicing in renowned medical centers, primarily in the United States with some in western Europe, this book is an outstanding treatise on a complicated subject. This impressive and authoritative work embodies a formal textbook on hemostasis and thrombosis.
