Description

Last published in 2014, this 10th edition book is an impressive two-volume set. It retains many features from the previous version, including the most useful video clips, now expanded to over 160, reflecting advances in contemporary foot and ankle surgery. The ebook is easily accessible and makes for a much more portable reference than the paper copy.

Purpose

The book is designed to serve as a comprehensive reference on foot and ankle surgery, a feat it most definitely accomplishes. From its original beginnings based on the personal experiences of a foot and ankle orthopedist with a podiatric background, the book has evolved over 60 plus years from a single-volume text to a two-volume set with multiple contributing authors. The eBook adds value, as this is an impractically large set to transport. It is easy to navigate, retaining all information in the electronic format.

Audience

While clearly aimed at the orthopedic community, the podiatric community will also benefit from this book. It will be of particular value to fellows in orthopedics planning to specialize in foot and ankle surgery and residents in podiatry and orthopedics, as well as practicing surgeons in both fields. Trauma surgeons will also find some aspects of the book useful. The physical size and cost of the two-volume set make it unlikely for students to own it. The primary editors are very well respected in their field. They assemble almost 70 contributors, both well-established and new voices, producing an outstanding authorship. All are published and many names are easily recognizable.

Features

The book is organized into over 11 sections, and is divided into two volumes and 47 chapters (an increase of seven from the previous version). Some topics have been moved into different areas in this new edition. Additional chapters reflect the increased experiences gained in total ankle arthroplasty. Cutaneous disorders, including toenail disorders, now have a podiatric authorship, although the accompanying video clips for these procedures still have an orthopedic narrator. Color plates are used throughout. However, while most illustrations are clear and excellent, some are blurred, and readers should expect better in a publication of this quality.

Assessment

Many texts on foot and ankle surgery have been developed over the decades since this book first appeared. However, few will command the respect that this book has earned. A book of this magnitude is always going to be valued, as it still represents one of the prime texts for foot and ankle surgeons. It is the orthopedist’s equivalent to McGlamry’s Comprehensive Textbook of Foot and Ankle Surgery, 5th Edition, Carpenter (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2021), revered by many podiatric foot and ankle surgeons. Inevitably, it also draws a comparison to Disorders of the Foot and Ankle, 2nd Edition, Jahss (Saunders, 1991). This 10th edition is justified, as it adds a good amount of new or revised material. It is well written and comprehensive in its coverage, yet retains a practical flavor, despite its size. In all respects, this book is highly recommended.
