Description
This second edition of a complete textbook on pediatric otolaryngology updates the first edition published in 2015. A companion to the three-volume Cummings Otolaryngology: Head and Neck Surgery, 7th edition, Flint et al. (Elsevier, 2021), it contains many of the same chapters as the first edition and adds some new ones. It is authored by a renowned pediatric otolaryngologist and the contributors are well known in the field. This edition also includes a companion eBook.
Purpose
This was designed mainly to consolidate the pediatric otolaryngology material of the larger book in a single volume, but it also has some new and unique information. The goal is also to highlight how underlying childhood conditions can impact care. The electronic version has added information to enhance the experience for readers. The goals are certainly worthy and are easily met.
Audience
The audience includes any otolaryngology practitioner who sees pediatric patients. This includes residents and students, as well as physician assistants and nurse practitioners. The book definitely meets the needs of all readers. The author and contributors are all well-known and credible authorities in the field.
Features
The book covers all aspects of pediatric otolaryngology care. Sections include craniofacial issues, hearing loss, infectious disorders, and lesions of the upper aerodigestive tract. There are some novel chapters in the hearing loss section. Each chapter highlights the key points at the beginning. The online material makes this a complete reference. There are no shortcomings.
Assessment
This update was definitely necessary to keep up with the growing volume of information in this subspecialty. This is considered one of the authoritative books in pediatric otolaryngology.
