Description

This book is from the Elsevier Diagnostic Pathology series. In this particular volume, the series’ characteristic high-yield and image-rich formatting is applied to the wide array of specimen types encountered in all realms of cytopathology. This third edition builds upon and updates information from the prior edition published in 2018.

Purpose

This book intends to provide a succinct, thorough, and up-to-date text in parallel with numerous images to the general pathologist, cytopathologist, cytologist, or pathology trainee who encounters virtually any type of cytology specimen preparation from clinically relevant sites.

Audience

This book will be of use to those who encounter cytology specimens in their clinical workflows and/or education, including general pathologists, pathology residents, cytopathologists, and cytologists.

Features

The content is subdivided into the five key parts of cytopathology practice: gynecologic cytopathology, exfoliative cytopathology, superficial fine needle aspiration, deep-seated fine needle aspiration, and management and ancillary testing. In the gynecologic cytopathology part, the content is subdivided into an overview and subsequent sections related to diagnostic categories (e.g., benign and infectious conditions, squamous cell abnormalities and mimics, and glandular cell abnormalities), ancillary testing, or specimen type (e.g., anal cytology, directly sampled endometrial cytology). In the exfoliative cytopathology, superficial fine needle aspiration, and deep-seated fine needle aspiration parts, the content is mostly subdivided into sections related to specific organs or organ systems. Within the sections of these first four parts, bullet-formatted text highlights relevant specimen collection methods, preparation types, clinical and radiologic background, cytologic features, differential diagnostic considerations, and useful ancillary test information.

An abundance of high-quality annotated images showcases the morphologic features described in the text for both specified disease entities and differential diagnoses. The last part on management and ancillary testing focuses on elements of cytology specimen preparation techniques, laboratory management, and a brief review of immunocytochemical and molecular assays that can be leveraged on cytologic specimens.

Assessment

This book is an excellent resource for anyone who evaluates cytology specimens in their clinical practice or educational journey.  The organization and layout of the book are intuitive and aesthetically pleasing. The text is succinct and thorough, providing helpful clinical information as well as morphologic pattern and microscopic finding descriptions associated with diseases and potential differential considerations. The new edition highlights recent developments in classification schemes and reporting terminology changes. The numerous high-quality and well-annotated images serve as a wonderful reference for diagnosis or rapid on-site evaluation. This book is highly recommended for all practicing pathologists, cytologists, and trainees.
