This book is the third edition of the series “Diagnostic Pathology: Hepatobiliary and Pancreas” and provides a comprehensive overview of neoplastic and non-neoplastic diseases in the hepatobiliary and pancreatic systems, including the liver, extrahepatic biliary tree, gallbladder, and pancreas. It includes updates from the 2019 World Health Organization (WHO) Classification of the digestive system, American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) 8th edition cancer staging, novel immunohistochemical markers and other ancillary techniques, as well as recent advances in molecular pathology and diagnostic techniques. The previous edition was published in 2016.
Purpose
This comprehensive textbook of hepatobiliary and pancreatic pathology is meant to be a quick, concise reference for practicing pathologists as well as trainees. It summarizes both common entities and challenging, complex diseases in an easy-to-read, bulleted format accompanied by high-quality images, descriptions, and tables.

This reference is intended for pathologists of all levels of experience as well as trainees who need to learn and review hepatobiliary and pancreatic pathology.

This book is divided into two parts. Part I focuses on the liver and is subdivided into 10 sections, including inherited/metabolic/developmental disorders, infectious disorders, chronic cholestatic/autoimmune disorders, pediatric cholestatic disorders, drug/toxin-related hepatitis, fatty liver diseases, vascular disorders, transplantation pathology, tumors of the liver, and miscellaneous hepatic disorders. Part II focuses on the pancreas and biliary tract, and is subdivided into six sections, including developmental/congenital, inflammatory disorders of the gallbladder and extrahepatic biliary tree, nonneoplastic and inflammatory disorders of the pancreas, tumors of the gallbladder and extrahepatic biliary tree, tumors of the pancreas, and tumors of the ampulla. The table of contents and title pages list the entities that are discussed and, in addition to the index, are an easy way to locate specific diseases. Each condition is described in a concise outline with key facts including clinical context, pathogenesis, microscopic features, macroscopic features, immunohistochemical stains, ancillary studies, prognosis, and differentials. Helpful information is summarized in easy-to-read tables. There are also tables to describe similar entities for quick, concise comparisons. Images of both microscopic features and gross findings are provided and are high quality with descriptive annotations.
Assessment
This book provides a thorough overview of various entities in hepatobiliary and pancreatic pathology. It is a comprehensive, easy-to-read, effective tool for both learning and quick reference. It is updated to include the most recent 2019 WHO Classification as well as current advances in molecular pathology.
Much like other books in the “Diagnostic Pathology” series, this book contains numerous high-quality images, and the annotations and descriptions highlight key differentiating features, making it an invaluable resource for learning pathology. It even provides images of immunohistochemical staining patterns.
The lists of differentials are incredibly helpful during diagnostic workup and to educate readers about similar entities that should be considered. The diagnostic checklists are especially helpful and emphasize important pathologic features and interpretation pearls. I strongly recommend this book to everyone interested in learning and reviewing hepatobiliary and pancreatic pathology.
