Description

The book covers diseases from different organ systems encountered in routine surgical pathology practice. There is a particular emphasis on key distinction of these entities from other common considerations in the differential diagnosis.

Purpose

The purpose of this book is to address frequently encountered differential diagnostic struggles and pitfalls in different areas of surgical pathology.

Chapter authors considered their consultative practices, and questions from trainees and other colleagues in selecting topics and diseases to cover.

Audience

This book’s primary audience is practicing surgical pathologists and pathology trainees.

Features

The book’s 13 chapters cover the following topics: gastrointestinal and gynecologic tract, neuropathology, hepatobiliary and pancreas, genitourinary tract, breast, bone and joint, soft tissue, head and neck, endocrine pathology, lung, mediastinum, and dermatopathology. It covers each entity systematically though several sections including clinical features, radiographic features (when pertinent), pathologic features, ancillary studies, differential diagnosis, and prognosis and therapy. The text is well written, and the emphasis is on differential diagnosis with many practical tips and diagnostic pearls provided. It includes many useful tables that compare different entities. The book is well illustrated with numerous high quality microscopic images. It includes a list of pertinent references at the end of each chapter as well as a comprehensive index.

Website Features

Like other pathology books published by Elsevier, online access is provided via the VitalSource website and app. The text is searchable and organized by chapter and page. There are no specific references within the body of the text, but each chapter does contain suggested readings at the end. These suggested readings are hyperlinked to the corresponding PMID on PubMed. The text is annotatable and there is a hyperlinked index at the end of the book. Some of the images in the book can be expanded.

Assessment

This book, written by experienced surgical pathologists, is highly practical and will be useful to anyone signing out surgical pathology specimens. It addresses the most common diagnostic dilemmas encountered in everyday practice and provides practical tips on how to resolve these differential diagnoses.

Microscopic images are well chosen and are of excellent quality. I would recommend this book to all surgical pathologists. In particular, the book can be especially valuable to residents and fellows who are looking to quickly establish a core knowledge in critical areas of surgical pathology.
