Description

This is the fourth edition of a reference guide to specimens that pathologists may encounter in general and subspecialty surgical pathology sign-out. The previous edition was published in 2014.

Purpose

The purpose is to provide a useful and succinct reference with a special emphasis on differential diagnosis for surgical pathology specimens.

Audience

The target audience is surgical pathologists, pathology residents, and any others interested in diagnostic surgical pathology.

Features

The first chapter focuses on special techniques and ancillary studies commonly used to assist in surgical pathological diagnosis such as immunohistochemistry, molecular diagnostics, flow cytometry, cytogenetics, etc. Subsequent chapters are dedicated to subspecialty topics and organ systems. Each chapter is organized in a bulleted outline format with subcategories. The topics are presented in one of two ways: histopathologic patterns with an underlying differential diagnosis, or a specific organ with the various associated neoplasms. Following each diagnosis is a bulleted list of salient features, differential diagnosis, and pearls. The pearls are often diagnostic clues that the authors have learned over their careers to assist in making the diagnosis.

Assessment

This is an excellent resource and can be used as a quick reference guide for diagnostic features, differential diagnoses, helpful ancillary studies, clinical features, and diagnostic helpful hints. The fourth edition has expanded information on diagnostic biomarkers. The book is thoughtfully organized, and the selected photomicrographs are of excellent quality and demonstrate key diagnostic features discussed in the text. Related diagnoses are often pictured near one another for easy comparison. This book is highly recommended for anyone interested in a resource for general or subspecialty-focused surgical pathology.
