Description

This book is a comprehensive internal medicine text distributed in two volumes. It is accompanied by a website and mobile app containing the complete book. Supplementary videos are noted in both print and digital formats. This 27th edition is an update to the previous version, which was published in 2020.

Purpose

The book is intended as a quick and thorough reference for physicians at any stage of their training and career. The availability of the online and mobile formats makes the “quick” objective of this text more realistic as few practicing physicians have time to locate and flip through a two-volume textbook. Owing to the ever-evolving nature of medicine and science, regular comprehensive updates to current knowledge and understanding of diseases such as this are essential.

Audience

Based on the breadth of chapter topics, the book is intended for anyone practicing adult medicine from training to independent practice. The vast majority of authors and contributors are MDs.

Features

Topics covered in the book are exhaustive for internal medicine. Early chapters define basic terms such as “symptom,” while others discuss specific cytokines likely to mediate disease processes and the intricacies of disease management. The book gives appropriate attention to the major organ systems and critical care. One area that receives particular focus is infectious disease, which consumes over 450 pages of the book. Short sections are also dedicated to Medical Ethics, Geriatrics, Women’s Health, and Behavioral Medicine. All information contained within the book is also available online and in the mobile app.

Assessment

This book is a well-written, comprehensive resource for internal medicine. The breadth of topics covered and multiple online features will greatly enhance exam preparation and serve as a valuable reference for direct patient care. This recent edition is both beneficial and necessary to keep the contents up to date.
