This book is part of the seven volume “Neonatology Questions and Controversies” series with this contribution covering issues and the latest advances in the newborn lung. The three editors and a who’s who of contributors have tackled many of the recent advances and some of the most difficult issues in neonatal pulmonology. Although only five years from the previous edition in 2019, this new edition is a welcomed update in a field that is advancing rapidly.

Purpose

The purpose of this fourth edition is to provide the most recent developments in “the pathophysiology, diagnosis and management of the most common neonatal respiratory problems”. This is a worthy objective since recent advances in the field of neonatal pulmonary care have attempted to reduce complications of ventilatory support and lung damage in the extremely low birth weight premature infant. This book summarizes some of the recent research on lung damage and injury mechanisms to improve the unacceptably high rate of chronic lung disease in these fragile infants. The website is an excellent adjunct to the printed text with hyperlinks to PubMed for references and excellent images suitable to use in teaching presentations.

Audience

The book’s audience is all providers of neonatal pulmonary care to premature infants. It is most appropriate for the advanced provider since it takes a deep dive into pathophysiology and pulmonary injury sequences. Some chapters such as the ones on delivery room management, surfactant delivery, and ventilator strategies are more practical for the bedside provider. The editors and contributors are internationally known experts in the field of neonatal pulmonary care.

Features

The book is divided into 20 chapters, each covering a different aspect of neonatal physiology and pulmonary care. Each chapter is written by different experts in the field and there is little overlap among the chapters. In this edition, new chapters have been added addressing neonatal nutrition and the lung, caffeine, and new imaging techniques. The illustrations and color art are well done and easy to understand.

Assessment

This edition is an excellent update of this important contribution to the field of neonatal pulmonary care. It is intended for more advanced providers who want a more comprehensive review of the latest research and management strategies. Other texts on standard neonatal ventilatory support like Goldsmith’s Assisted Ventilation of the Neonate, 7th Edition, Keszler and Gautham (Elsevier, 2022) or Manual of Neonatal Respiratory Care, 5th Edition, Donn, Mammel and van Kaam (Springer, 2022) offer more practical advice on equipment and standard ventilator management and may be more appropriate for bedside care and advice. However, this book highlights the most recent advances and research and points the way to the future in this rapidly changing field.
