Purpose
The authors set out to create a new resource with a strong clinical orientation, updating the first edition of Netter’s Infectious Diseases, which made its debut in 2012. This second edition continues their purpose to provide healthcare providers, both generalists and specialists, with up-to-date clinical approaches to the broad spectrum of infectious diseases. They provide a perspective of how various infections may impact patients as individuals, members of communities, and as citizens of global society. Moreover, the original Netter illustrations are judiciously augmented by additional artwork and photographs to provide memories for decades.
Audience
The authors want to share their own appreciation for how much Netter’s art has contributed to their own enjoyment in medical education to their peers, trainees, and students of infectious diseases. The authors have put together a superb roster of talented contributing authors, recruited from their extended network of colleagues and friends, creating a concise, highly readable, and clinically relevant review of infectious diseases.
Features
The book is divided into nine sections with 97 chapters that incorporate the artistic work of Dr. Frank H. Netter. Dr. Netter’s medical illustrations, in some cases revised to reflect new advances, are used to illustrate key points from the text, augmented by radiographic and photographic images, tables, and graphs. For some topics, there is the creation of new and updated artwork by talented artists carrying on Dr. Netter’s mission of using art as an educational icon. The content in this second edition has been thoroughly reviewed, updated, and augmented. The addition of clinical vignettes to many chapters in this edition will further enhance the book as an educational resource and reference.
Assessment
The authors are successful in providing an educational resource and reference in infectious diseases that creates memorable understanding and insight. The late Dr. Frank H. Netter’s understanding of anatomy, physiology, pathogenesis, and clinical signs of disease are translated by his incredible artistic talent into visual images that reduce complexities into simple concepts, which improve patient care and add lasting enjoyment to medical education.
