Description

This book provides an extensive overview of the routine care of dialysis patients, including different types of dialysis as well as how to deal with complications that can arise for dialysis patients.

Purpose

The book seeks to provide a reliable source of information for clinicians caring for adults and children who require dialysis. This book thoroughly covers the myriad issues these patients can face with their chronic illnesses. It is an approachable resource that greatly aids in the clinical pursuit of providing the highest quality of patient care for those needing dialysis.

Audience

This book is geared toward clinicians who are actively caring for adults or children undergoing dialysis. The information is particularly well suited for nephrologists-in-training and is also a great resource for practicing nephrologists to efficiently review topics of interest.

Features

The book has 87 chapters, which are organized and logical. This edition provides many color images and has been resized for easier reading. There are newly added chapters as well. Several chapters include annotated bibliographies, which are particularly helpful for further guided reading.

Assessment

This book provides excellent information in a straightforward manner regarding the evidence available for providing high-quality care for adult and pediatric dialysis patients. The book considers the many clinical and scientific trials concerning dialysis patients and brings this information into a meaningful clinical context. The information concerning various types of dialysis equipment, water treatment processes, and safety monitoring in dialysis are all particularly well written. The tables provided throughout the book are well-organized and concise. I enjoyed seeing the color photos provided with the discussion of dialysis venous access, which greatly aided the descriptive and informative written content. This book demonstrates itself as not only a great resource for hemodialysis but also provides very detailed information concerning the management of peritoneal dialysis patients. I was glad to see COVID-19 infection in the setting of dialysis patients is given its chapter.

The book includes many tables concerning details of drug clearance, which are quite helpful. There is an extensive number of chapters concerning the clinical care of pediatric patients requiring dialysis. Overall, this book is a great resource for those responsible for the care of adult or pediatric dialysis patients and I readily recommend it to others providing dialysis care.
