Description
I remember Dr. Rapini’s first dermatopathology book published in 1988 Atlas of Dermatopathology. It was my favorite reference for learning dermatopathology. In this book, the histology photographs are well labelled, showing the characteristic findings for given diseases. The author has thoughtfully captured microscopic images at low, medium, and high power, which is how one would view the slides in real life. The text is replete with clues for interpreting and differentiating similar conditions. The second edition was published 2012 with glossy paper (which I miss in this third edition).
Purpose
The purpose is to teach dermatopathology to pathology and dermatology residents.
Audience
The audience is dermatologists and pathologists plannng to be dermatopathologists.
Features
Dr. Rapini has organized information with clinical dermatologists in mind. Entities are grouped according to etiology and clinical presentation. This is extremely useful because when the dermatologist biopsies a condition, the clinical differential diagnosis is listed and the text describes the characteristic patterns seen with these diagnoses. Unlike other dermatopathology books, this one provides clever histology descriptions that will stick in your brain. The color histology photographs are excellent and well labeled. The last chapter is a comprehensive explanation of immunohistochemical stains used in dermatopathology. Preciseness in terminology is emphasized throughout.
Assessment
This is an excellent dermatopathology book that I wholeheartedly recommend to all, regardless of experience. This book is a pleasure to peruse.
