Description
This book is a comprehensive reference book covering the fetal and neonatal aspects of immunology and infectious diseases from a global perspective.
Specific infectious diseases are covered in great detail, with specific recommendations for prevention and treatment. The companion eBook is available on Elsevier+ and is a faithful adaptation of the physical book. The previous edition was published in 2015.
Purpose
This book is a source of updated and relevant knowledge on congenital and acquired infectious diseases for those involved in the care of fetuses and newborns. By compiling a vast amount of global scientific inquiry into a comprehensive reference book, it aims to enhance knowledge of investigators, students, and practitioners. With a focus on global perspectives in infectious disease, it also aims to draw attention to inequities in disease burden and mortality worldwide. This is an essential book for practicing clinicians caring for fetuses and newborns in any capacity. A significant advantage to the eBook is the addition of hyperlinked journal articles. The chapters of the book make heavy use of references, and it is easy to access the primary source with just two clicks.
Audience
This book has a broad potential audience, including medical students, trainees, scientists, and clinicians. While intended especially for infectious disease specialists, many are involved in caring for pregnant women, fetuses, and neonates impacted by congenital and acquired infections. Obstetricians, pediatricians, and neonatologists will find the disease-specific overviews in the book useful and clinically relevant to their practice. The book notes that complications of congenital and neonatal infections extend into childhood and that many other specialists may benefit from the included knowledge, including neurologists, audiologists, and ophthalmologists. Parts of the book – such as discussions of immunology – may be overly specific for the needs of a primary care provider. It is well-designed for locating a specific topic of interest and finding the necessary information. The authors include both national and global authorities in infectious diseases, based on their reputation and wide body of published works.
Features
The book covers general aspects of fetal and neonatal immunology and infectious diseases in the first section. The subsequent three sections cover specific infections, with reviews of bacterial, viral, and other infectious diseases.
While diagnosis and management are discussed in each chapter with reference to individual infections, the concluding section reviews some general concepts in diagnosis, treatment and prevention of infections. The diseases-specific chapters are extremely thorough and well-researched, with updated references and clinically relevant material throughout. Many chapters include relevant references to global perspectives and attention to health equity issues. The book makes use of tables, pictures, and graphics throughout to illustrate salient points and build engagement. The first section includes a detailed review of immunology that might be more technical than required for a clinician outside of infectious disease or immunology.
Website Features
The eBook can be accessed easily from the Elsevier website or eBooks+ app. Differences between the physical text and the eBook are not significant.
Advantages of the eBook include the hyperlinked journal articles, of special importance given the volume of referenced scientific literature in this text. Since those using this book may find themselves looking for specific infectious diseases, it also provides a fast and convenient way to navigate to specific chapters or content areas. The eBook includes many tables and figures, which display adequately on the computer and the app.
Assessment
This is a comprehensive, thoroughly researched, and well-written book. A wide range of audiences will find some or all of it to be useful in their education, research, or clinical practice. The organization of the book is useful in navigating to specific chapters. This edition includes two new chapters on novel infections since the previous edition – SARS-CoV-2 and Zika Virus.
Additionally, chapters are updated to reflect changes in practice regarding care of extremely preterm infants, emergence of treatment resistant infections, and new contributions to an expansive body of scientific work.
