Description

This is the fourth edition of this comprehensive book on neoplastic and nonneoplastic entities of the genitourinary tract as well as the adrenal gland. The third edition was published in 2014.

Purpose

Like the previous editions, the aim of this one is to describe the practical clinical, histopathological, and cytology characteristics of disease processes in the genitourinary system. Furthermore, this edition seeks to focus on recently described histological variants of tumors, diagnostic makers and cancer genomics. This edition reflects the recently revised AJCC staging and World Health Organization tumor classifications.

Audience

This book is intended for a broad spectrum of healthcare providers who are involved in the diagnosis or management of patients with genitourinary conditions. This includes pathologists, urologists, and medical oncologists. Pathology residents or fellows who intend to have a practice that emphasizes genitourinary specimens will find this comprehensive reference particularly useful.

Features

The book is organized primarily by genitourinary organs. For each organ, the chapters begin by covering the embryological development and gross and microscopic features of the relevant tissue. After addressing benign conditions, the book then comprehensively covers the histological, immunohistochemical, and genetic features of relevant neoplastic entities. A comprehensive differential diagnosis and anticipated clinical behavior for each tumor are also provided. Each section is accompanied by multiple high-quality gross and micro photographs. This book is extraordinarily well referenced and reflects recent major publications regarding each entity. Moreover, the chapters have been substantially updated to reflect significant advances in grading, histological classification, and molecular characterization.

Assessment

This extraordinary work continues to be a definitive reference for genitourinary pathology. It is truly comprehensive, and readers seeking a full unabbreviated explanation of the subject will find this book particularly helpful. In areas that have been recently dynamic (e.g. renal pathology tumor classification), readers are able to use the book and associated reference citations to understand the evolution of recent terms or entities in the literature (such as in the chapter on emerging or provisional renal cell carcinomas). Overall, this is an excellent book that should be in the library of any pathologist or clinician who regularly deals with diseases or tumors that affect the genitourinary system.
