Richard B. Goldbloom, OC, MD, FRCPC, Dlitt(Hon) is Professor of Pediatrics and Chancellor Emeritus, Dalhousie University; Active Medical Staff, IWK Health Centre, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. He is a co-author of Pediatric Clinical Skills, 4th Edition.

 

Dr. Goldbloom received a Doctor of Medicine degree from McGill University, and did his post-graduate work at the Royal Victoria Hospital, the Montreal Children’s Hospital, and the Children’s Hospital Boston. He was the head of Dalhousie University’s Department of Pediatrics from 1967 to 1985, was the first physician-in-chief and director of research at the Izaak Walton Killam Hospital for Children in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and was the fifth chancellor of Dallhousie University.

 

Much honored in Canada and worldwide, Dr. Goldbloom has devoted his life to improving the lives of children. In a career spanning half a century, he has been greatly admired for his compassion and his unique ability to communicate with patients and their families.

 

He achieved international recognition as a pioneer of family participation in the care of hospitalized children, having introduced one of the first Care-by-Parent Units in Canada.  He has authored hundreds of articles and seven books, including Pediatric Clinical Skills, a popular textbook for medical undergraduates and postgraduates.  He has taught and lectured in many countries, providing guidance on issues of health care for children.  Chair or president of many boards and committees, Dr. Goldbloom has received many accolades including four honorary degrees and the F.N.G. Starr Award.  In 2006, the Dr. Richard B. Goldbloom Research and Clinical Care Pavilion at the IWK Health Centre was named in his honor.

 

Dr. Goldbloom was inducted into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame in 2017.
