Achilles J. Pappano, PhD is Professor Emeritus at the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington, Connecticut. He is a co-author of Cardiovascular Physiology, 10th Edition, part of the Mosby Physiology Monograph series. He is editor of the section on the cardiovascular system in Berne & Levy Physiology, 6th edition.
Dr. Pappano received a PhD in pharmacology from the University of Pennsylvania in 1966. After a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Physiology at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, he joined the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Connecticut Health Center in 1968. His laboratory studied development of autonomic neuroeffector transmission in the embryonic heart and the regulation by autonomic neurotransmitters of excitation-contraction coupling in adult heart. He served on the National Board of Medical Examiners and on study sections of the National Institutes of Health.
Dr. Pappano received the Charles Loeser Award for outstanding teaching in the basic science curriculum from the University of Connecticut Health Center and the Alumni Association Faculty Excellence Award in Teaching at the graduate level from the University of Connecticut. He was a visiting professor at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium as a senior fellow of the Belgian-American Education Foundation, and at the Laboratoire de Pathophysiologie, Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale, Montpellier, France.
