Alexander R. Vaccaro, MD, PhD, FACS, is Professor and Attending Surgeon of Orthopaedics and Neurosurgery at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and Vice Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedics. He is co-director of the Regional Spinal Cord Injury Center of the Delaware Valley and co-director of the Spine Fellowship program at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. He is also Assistant Team Physician for the Philadelphia Eagles and a partner at the Rothman Institute in Philadelphia. Dr. Vaccaro is a co-author of Surgical Anatomy and Techniques to the Spine, 2nd Edition and Operative Techniques: Spine Surgery, 2nd Edition.
Dr. Vaccaro received his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine. He completed a year of surgical internship at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, followed by an orthopaedic surgery residency at Thomas Jefferson University. He then completed a spine fellowship at the University of San Diego, and later earned a PhD in the field of spinal trauma.
Dr. Vaccaro specializes in the comprehensive treatment of numerous pathologic conditions affecting the cervical, thoracic, and lumbosacral spines including degenerative disk disease, scoliosis and other deformities, trauma, infections, and tumors. He has an interest in minimally invasive surgical techniques and image-guided technologies in the management of spinal disorders.
Dr. Vaccaro was asked to be the only orthopaedic surgeon reviewer for the Journal of Neurosurgery Spine and is a member of the American Association of Neurologic Surgeons (AANS). He has done extensive research on a broad range of topics related to disorders of the spine and has over 360 peer-reviewed and over 150 non peer-reviewed publications, as well as more than 200 book chapters. Dr. Vaccaro has been listed in Philadelphia Magazine’s Top Docs for multiple consecutive years.
