Anne C. Brower, MD is an acclaimed authority on bone radiology. In 1993, this highly respected clinical educator and practitioner was named Chair of the Department of Radiology at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia, bridging a longstanding gender divide as the first woman to attain that title in the U.S. She was former Senior Chaplain and Director of Healing Ministry at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. but left that role to return to EVMS where she worked to teach the importance of spirituality in medicine. Dr. Brower was also the Assisting Priest at Christ and St. Luke’s Church in Norfolk, VA where she did a great deal of patient advocacy. She recently moved to Arizona where she hopes to continue teaching in her fields of expertise.
On the clinical front, Dr. Brower has consulted on a wide variety of cases at institutions in the greater Washington, D.C., area, including Bethesda Naval Hospital, Walter Reed Army Medical Center, and the National Institutes of Health. Widely known for her ability to accurately diagnose arthritis, bone tumors and other bone and joint diseases, she has been called on various occasions to consult on the care of U.S. presidents, including the late Ronald Reagan and the elder President George Bush. Among Dr. Brower’s significant contributions to the medical literature is her research relating to the neuropathic joint. Although it was previously believed that the joint malfunctioned mostly because of unsensed trauma, Dr. Brower proved that it was a change in the sympathetic nervous system that affected the blood flow and caused bone loss and, eventually, collapse of the joint.
Dr. Brower and Donald Flemming, MD are co-authors of Arthritis in Black and White, 3rd Edition.
