The textbook Rhinoplasty is the product of 32 years of thinking, analyzing and following patients.” – Dr. Bahman Guyuron

Why Plastic Surgery?

I loved my pediatrician. Every time I saw him I just wanted to be like him. Since age four, anytime anybody asked me what I want to be when I grow up, my answer was a doctor. I chose plastic surgery because I was intrigued by the positive results and by being able to see the changes in a patient right away. In fact, I was originally very interested in neurosurgery. I started in a neurosurgery residency but soon discovered I couldn’t tolerate the disappointing outcomes. At the time, most neurosurgery patients would not wake up or would wake up paralyzed. I get very connected with patients and so I didn’t think that I would have been an effective physician had I been a neurosurgeon. It was the artistic and positive side of plastic surgery that compelled me to pursue a plastic surgery residency.

Watching Then Doing

The videos that complement the textbook Rhinoplasty are important because watching someone do a procedure is the most effective way to learn the procedure. No matter how much you write about a procedure, it may still not be clear to the reader. But when people watch a video, they can mimic what they see and transfer that to the operating room. In fact, we usually tell residents or new graduates to review a video the night before a procedure. It helps them follow written directions a lot more successfully, too. The videos are a wonderful educational tool.

Decades of Information

The Guyuron Rhinoplasty book is quintessential because it has animations and videos that I don’t think any other book has. Plastic surgeons are very visual; when they see something, they understand it better. In addition to the animations and videos, Guyuron Rhinoplasty is the product of 32 years of thinking, analyzing, and following patients. We learn a lot from patients. This book is essentially an amalgamation of what I have gathered over the years and what I have learned from the others. With this book, I have share what I know with leaders, colleagues, residents, and fellows. It is the most comprehensive way you can communicate and teach somebody.
