Brian J. Cole, MD, MBA is Professor in the Department of Orthopaedics and the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology, and Section Head of the Cartilage Restoration Center at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. He is Chairman of Surgery at Rush Oak Park Hospital.  Dr. Cole is co-author of Surgical Techniques of the Shoulder, Elbow, and Knee in Sports Medicine, 2nd Edition and Operative Techniques: Sports Knee Surgery and is the editor of the Operative Techniques in Sports Medicine periodical.

Dr. Cole received his medical degree from the University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine and performed his postgraduate work at the Hospital for Special Surgery at the Cornell Medical Center and the University of Pittsburgh. His practice emphasis is on sports medicine, cartilage transplantation, arthroscopy, and shoulder, elbow, and knee surgery. Dr. Cole’s research interests include cartilage transplantation, rotator cuff healing, and shoulder instability.

As Section Head of the Cartilage Research and Restoration Center at Rush University Medical Center, Dr. Cole oversees a multidisciplinary program specializing in the treatment of arthritis in young active patients. He also serves as the head of the Orthopedic Master’s Program and trains residents and fellows in sports medicine and research. Through his basic science and clinical research, Dr. Cole has developed several innovative techniques for the treatment of shoulder, elbow, and knee conditions. Dr. Cole lectures nationally and internationally and has authored more than 1,000 articles and five widely read textbooks in orthopaedics.

Dr. Cole has been chosen as one of the Best Doctors in America each year since 2004 and as a Top Doctor in the Chicago metro area each year since 2003. In 2006, he was featured as Chicago’s Top Doctor and featured on the cover of Chicago Magazine. Dr. Cole is the team physician for the Chicago Bulls NBA Basketball team, co-team physician for the Chicago White Sox Major League Baseball team and DePaul University in Chicago. In 2009, Dr. Cole was chosen as the NBA Team Physician of the Year.
