News & Articles > Data Privacy Day – How to Keep Your Personal Data Safe

In today’s world where vast amounts of information can be found in just a few short clicks, data privacy has never been more important. In honor of Data Privacy Day on January 28th, Elsevier’s Data Protection Office would like to share a few tips on how you can help to protect the privacy of your personal information:

  • Don’t share more about your personal life than is necessary and that you are happy to share with the world on a CV, in an author vitae, in a blog, in comments etc.
  • Use strong passwords, don’t use the same password for different accounts and never share your passwords with anyone else, including your admin and editor.
  • Use professional contact details, not personal household details, in correspondence and keep the two separate.
  • Beware of mixed use of social media accounts such as Facebook, Twitter, etc, for both professional and personal purposes and consider maintaining separate accounts, using different privacy settings for each as appropriate for the audience.
  • Beware of phishing emails and fraudulent calls for papers.  If you receive a suspicious email purporting to be from Elsevier, do not reply and do not open any attachments contained in the message but instead kindly forward the message to Elsevier’s Author Support Department at support@elsevier.com for investigation.
