David M. Gershenson, MD, is the J. Taylor Wharton, MD, Distinguished Chair in Gynecologic Oncology on the Department of Gynecologic Oncology, Division of Surgery at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. He is also Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at the University of Texas Medical School at the University of Texas Health Science Center. Dr. Gershenson is a co-author of the highly regarded Comprehensive Gynecology, 6th Edition and Gynecologic Cancer: Controversies in Management.
Dr. Gershenson received his medical degree from Vanderbilt School of Medicine in Nashville, and did his postgraduate training at the University of Iowa Hospital, the Yale-New Haven Hospital, and the MD Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute. He is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and gynecologic oncology.
Dr. Gershenson has received numerous honors and awards, including Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, America’s Top Obstetricians and Gynecologists, U.S. News Top Doctors (top 1% in the nation in his specialty), Best Doctors, and the President’s Award from the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists. He is the author of many books, book chapters, and peer-reviewed original research articles.
In collaboration with several clinical and basic science colleagues, Dr. Gershenson is conducting several clinical and translational studies of rare ovarian tumors. He is the principal investigator or co-principal investigator of clinical trials focused on novel therapeutics for patients with low-grade serous carcinoma of the ovary.
He has been co-principal investigator of the National Cancer Institute’s Specialized Program of Research Excellence (SPORE) grant in Ovarian Cancer since 1999. In 2010, he was elected Co-Chair of the NCI Gynecologic Cancer Steering Committee. In 2006, he was appointed to serve as a member of the NCI’s Gynecologic Cancer Steering Committee, which reviews and approves all phase III and large phase II clinical trials of gynecologic cancers conducted in North America.
