David N. Herndon, MD is a plastic surgeon, recognized burn expert and chief of staff and director of research at the Shriners Burns Hospital in Galveston. He also holds the Jesse H. Jones Distinguished Chair in Burn Surgery. Dr. Herndon has particular research focus in the areas of wound healing, rehabilitation, burn treatment, and inhalation injury. He is an author of the text Total Burn Care.
An award-winning surgeon and researcher within the plastic surgery field, Dr. Herndon received the Harvey Stuart Allen Distinguished Service Award from the American Burn Association and the Flance-Karl Award from the American Surgical Association in recognition of his fundamental contributions in the pathophysiology of thermal injury. He received medical training at Case Western Reserve University, Duke University, and the Brooke Army Medical Center-Institute of Surgical Research at Cornell Medical Center. Dr. Herndon has been active in many professional organizations. Among his many roles, he has served as a consultant for the American Board of Surgery, president of the American Burn Association, and president of the Society of University Surgeons.
