Description

Part of the Diagnostic Pathology series, this second edition of a book on cytopathology provides a comprehensive updated reference in the well known outline style with annotated photomicrographs. The previous edition was published in 2014.

Purpose

The purpose is to provide a comprehensive general reference for cytopathology. It spans most entities that pathologists will encounter in their day-to-day practice.

Audience

This book is intended for practicing pathologists, cytotechnologists, and trainees.

Features

Using the familiar format of the Diagnostic Pathology series, this book includes clinical presentation, imaging, morphological descriptions, ancillary studies, and a detailed differential diagnosis. The information is presented in outline format, making it great for quick reference, while also remaining remarkably in depth for dealing with complicated differential diagnoses. The photomicrographs are of excellent quality, and include annotation of features that are described within the figure keys. The overall layout and design of the book is aesthetically pleasing and will feel familiar to anyone who has used other books in this series. This edition provides a much-needed update to the 2014 edition, including material from the 2014 update of The Bethesda System for Reporting Cervical Cytopathology and the more recent 2017 update of The Bethesda System for Thyroid Cytopathology. The section on salivary gland neoplasms incorporates information from The Milan System for Reporting Salivary Gland Cytology and the urinary cytology portion is updated with information from The Paris System for Reporting Urinary Cytology. In addition to these and countless other updates, it also includes the most current information on immunohistochemistry and molecular markers. The book also has sections on ancillary studies, quality management, and techniques for performing both superficial and image-guided fine needle aspirations.

Assessment

This is a great resource on cytopathology. While it contains the same information as other well-known general cytopathology books, it uses the familiar formatting of the Diagnostic Pathology series. This makes it suitable for a quick reference, but it also contains more than adequate information for more in-depth study. The photomicrographs are high quality, and the annotations are very helpful to point out key features, particularly to trainees. The online access is also a great asset, and allows quick searching for any terms or entities throughout the book. Online access is also great on a tablet or personal computer. Overall, this is an excellent general cytopathology book and makes a great addition to any pathologist’s library.
