This is the second edition of a book on gynecological pathology in the highly regarded Diagnostic Pathology series. This edition contains multiple updates including new entities, molecular updates, and classification updates.

Purpose

This book serves as a multipurpose resource for a wide variety of users practicing gynecologic pathology. It provides a high-yield review of numerous gynecological neoplasms and diseases and correlates with the WHO Classification updates. Additionally, its bullet-point format makes it a useful quick reference for specific questions/content while reviewing cases in real time.

Audience

This book will be of use to a wide variety of individuals, including general pathologists, pathology residents, and subspecialty gynecological pathologists.

Features

The book is divided into seven main sections covering vulva, vagina, uterine cervix, uterine corpus, fallopian tube and broad ligament, ovary, and peritoneum. Each section is subdivided by inflammatory disorders, non-neoplastic lesions, and neoplasms. Each chapter or disease entity starts with key facts to provide a high-yield, quick reference for pathologists. The key facts include terminology, clinical issues, a brief microscopic description, ancillary tests, and a differential diagnosis. From there, each disease is reviewed in further detail, providing the etiology, clinical issues, macroscopic description, detailed microscopic description, ancillary testing, and a detailed differential diagnosis. The ancillary testing section includes, but is not limited to, immunoperoxidase staining patterns, cytology findings, genetic testing, and molecular findings. The differential diagnosis section discusses each differential along with similarities and differences to the disease entity. Additionally, the book has outstanding, high-quality, high-resolution pictures that represent well the disease entity. In general, multiple pictures including H&Es and immunoperoxidase staining are provided to show the spectrum of appearances each disease entity has. Each figure is annotated and provides high-yield content with each picture to help demonstrate the disease process.

Assessment

This diagnostic pathology series continues to be a wonderful resource. This update is an extremely useful for multiple readers including pathologists in training, general pathologists, and subspecialty gynecological pathologists.The second edition provides critical WHO updates, molecular updates, new entities, and classifications of gynecologic malignancies to ensure readers are learning the most current information. The book is great a resource for all pathologists at the microscope while reviewing cases. The bullet-point format allows for a quick reference and quick understanding of different pathological entities. Additionally, the numerous pictures for each entity enable readers to easily flip through and “picture match” during difficult cases. The book also serves as a great review resource, compiling high-yield facts about each disease entity. From personal experience, the differential diagnosis section has allowed me to broaden my differential when encountering challenging cases and further delineate them through the features the book provides. In summary, this is a wonderful book that provides high-yield, accurate, and up-to-date information in the challenging subspecialty of gynecological pathology. It is highly recommended for every pathology department and/or personal library.
