“Students have complimented us on how useful the book is for USMLE Step 1.” – Duane E. Haines, PhD

About Fundamental Neuroscience for Basic and Clinical Applications

Fundamental Neuroscience for Basic and Clinical Applications, 5th Edition is designed for teaching the first year medical student, although other student groups use it. It really was designed to have a good anatomical base because, nowadays in MRI and CT, we are able to see anatomy in great detail and need to introduce applicable clinical information in the proper context so that students will know why something is clinically important.

Better Examples of CT and MRI

This edition has better, more precise examples of CT and MRI. For example, we included three MRIs that show very tiny legions in the midbrain that give rise to very specific sensory deficits. We’ve improved the artwork, we have done new artwork, we have added things, we have taken out some things that we probably didn’t need to have. The improvements have been based on talking to medical students to find out what worked and what didn’t work and being sensitive to that. The success of the book is based on it being useful in the medical education setting.

Designed for Students

Another nice feature of this edition is that all the clinical information throughout the book is going to be highlighted in light blue so that when the student opens the book to a set of pages, everything blue is clinical. In some chapters, that’s a significant amount of information. I’ve always believed that we are trying to teach the medical student to understand how valuable this clinical information is and how directly it relates to the anatomical things. Students have complimented us on how useful the book is for USMLE Step 1.
