Jennifer Niebyl, MD speaks about her experience with her new textbook, Obstetrics: Normal and Problem Pregnancies, and what interests her in the field of obstetrics.

We brainstormed about each topic with national experts. Nobody turned us down, it was amazing; everyone wanted to contribute to a new obstetrics book.
I’ve been particularly interested in medical drug use in pregnancy and I find myself talking to a lot of women who have medical illnesses — whether it’s Crohn’s disease or lupus — and reassuring them that they can stay on their immunosuppressant drugs and that a flare-up of the disease would be much worse for them than staying on the medicine they’re on. So many patients who have been told they should never get pregnant are having successful pregnancies.
Acknowledged for her clinical expertise, teaching, and published work in the field, Jennifer R. Niebyl, MD has had a broad influence within the field of obstetrics. She was Professor and Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Iowa College of Medicine for 21 years until 2009, and is currently Professor and staff physician at the University of Iowa. Dr. Niebyl has particular research and clinical focus in the area of high-risk obstetrics, with particular focus on medical diseases in pregnancy, birth defects, and drug use in pregnancy. She has authored and co-authored numerous medical texts including Obstetrics: Normal and Problem Pregnancies, which is now in its sixth edition.
Dr. Niebyl holds an MD from Yale University, and continued her medical training at the New York Hospital-Cornell University Medical Center and Johns Hopkins Hospital. She is certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, a diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners, and a fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She has served as a member of the FDA Fertility and Maternal Health Drugs Advisory Committee, has been an examiner for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and has served on several committees for the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
