Joann G. Elmore, MD, MPH, is a professor of medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine, an adjunct professor of epidemiology at the UW School of Public Health and Community Medicine, and an internist who sees patients at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, WA. Dr. Elmore is a co-author of Jekel’s Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Preventive Medicine, and Public Health, 4th Edition.
A leading expert on many issues related to breast cancer, Dr. Elmore has contributed to our understanding of the variability of mammographic readings among radiologists; the effect of radiologists’ experience on accuracy; the impact of clinical histories on interpretation of mammograms; racial differences in breast cancer screening/outcomes; and the cumulative false-positive rates of mammography and clinical breast examination. Her findings have been published in top journals in the field.
Dr. Elmore has served on numerous national committees, including study sections for the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality, the American Cancer Society, and the Institute of Medicine National Advisory Panel on the safety of silicone breast implants. Dr. Elmore’s data and conclusions are cited frequently in the National Cancer Institute’s expert panel reports. She is also a member of the National Advisory Committee for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholars Program.
Dr. Elmore received her medical degree from Stanford University School of Medicine in 1987. She performed a residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in infectious disease at Yale University. Additionally at Yale, she participated in the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program and earned her MPH in epidemiology and public health.
