John Herring, MD is Chief of Staff (Emeritus) at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, Professor of Orthopaedics at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, an active staff member at Children’s Medical Center in Dallas, and consulting physician at Parkland Memorial Hospital. He is a co-author of the highly regarded Tachdjian’s Pediatric Orthopaedics, 4th Edition.
Dr. Herring is an honor graduate of Baylor University College of Medicine. He completed his internship in medicine at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston and a surgical research fellowship at Harvard University. Dr. Herring completed his junior residency in surgery and his residency in orthopaedic surgery in the Harvard Combined Orthopaedic Residency Program, as well as the Berg Sloat Traveling Fellowship in 1975.
Dr. Herring served as Chief of Staff at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children beginning in 1978, and was the third physician in the history of the hospital in this position. He has served as chairman of the Pediatric Committee of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and president of the Pediatric Orthopedic Society of North America. Dr. Herring is also an associate editor for the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. His research interests include Legg-Calve-Perthes disease and spinal deformity.
Dr. Herring’s numerous honors and awards include the Distinguished Achievement Award from the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America, the Benjamin Rush Award for citizenship and community service from the American Medical Association, the Arthur H. Huene Memorial Award for outstanding contribution to the field of pediatric orthopedics given by The Pediatric Orthopedic Society of North America, the Anson Jones Award for outstanding contributions to society, and the Russell S. Hibbs Award for best scientific presentation of clinical research at Scoliosis Research Society.
