John A. Kaufman, MD is a professor and the Frederick S. Keller Chair of Interventional Radiology at Dotter Interventional Institute and Professor of Radiology, Surgery, and Medicine at Oregon Health and Sciences University, all in Portland. He is also Chief of Vascular and Interventional Radiology and Associate Director of the Dotter Interventional Institute. Dr. Kaufman is a co-author of Vascular and Interventional Radiology, part of the popular Requisites in Radiology series.

After earning his medical degree at Boston University School of Medicine, Dr. Kaufman was a resident and chief resident in radiology at Boston City Hospital/The University Hospital. He completed his early training there with a fellowship in vascular and interventional radiology. At the completion of his training, Dr. Kaufman joined the section of vascular radiology at the Massachusetts General Hospital, where he worked until becoming a member of the Dotter Institute in 2000.

Dr. Kaufman is interested in vascular interventions and the development of new techniques and devices. Most recently, he has worked on aortic stent grafts and retrievable vena cava filters. He has participated in laboratory and clinical research, and is involved at a national level in related clinical trials. His other areas of interest include non-invasive vascular imaging with magnetic resonance (MRA) and computed tomography (CTA), gynecologic vascular interventions such as uterine fibroid and ovarian vein embolization, and long-term central venous access.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Kaufman has published peer-reviewed articles, reviewed articles, edited several books, and lectured at local, national, and international meetings. He reviews articles for several journals and is an assistant editor of vascular imaging for the American Journal of Radiology. He is actively involved in committee work for both the SCVIR and the American Heart Association. Dr. Kaufman was awarded a Figley Fellowship in Radiologic Journalism by AJR in 1996, and was elected a fellow of the SCVIR in 1998. He enjoys teaching and was voted Teacher of the Year by the radiology residents at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Kaufman was also the 2012 Dr. Charles T. Dotter Lecturer, an honor extended to accomplished and exceptional interventional radiologists for extraordinary career achievement and contributions to the specialty.

Out of the hospital, Dr. Kaufman enjoys spending time with his family, traveling, cross-country skiing and exploring new restaurants. He plans to hike and fly-fish the entire Northwest with his wife and children.
