Jonathan Himmelfarb, MD is Professor of Medicine, Joseph W. Eschbach Endowed Chair for Kidney Research; Director, Kidney Research Institute, Department of Medicine, Division of Nephrology at the University of Washington in Seattle. He is a co-author of Chronic Kidney Disease, Dialysis, and Transplantation, 4th Edition.

 

Dr. Himmelfarb received his MD from the George Washington University School of Medicine, after which he performed fellowships in Nephrology at Maine Medical Center and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Nephrology.

 

Dr. Himmelfarb’s research interests involve metabolic complications of kidney disease including CKD, ESRD and AKI. He has also been involved in creating statewide, community-based research into healthcare disparities related to chronic kidney disease and he evaluates novel approaches to renal replacement therapies.

 

Dr. Himmelfarb is the author of more than 200 peer-reviewed publications. He has served on numerous grant review committees, scientific advisory boards, and has held leadership positions in many national and international nephrology societies. He has been President of American Society of Nephrology, Associate Editor of the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, and has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, Kidney International, BMC Medicine, and the Faculty of 1000 in Medicine. Dr. Himmelfarb has served on expert panels for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Veterans Health Administration, and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

 

He recently received the Donald W. Seldin Award from the National Kidney Foundation in recognition of his three decades of leadership in clinical and translational research focused on kidney disease.
