Jonathan J. Dutton, MD, PhD, FACS is Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is the author of Atlas of Clinical and Surgical Orbital Anatomy, 2nd Edition and Radiology of the Orbit and Visual Pathways.
After receiving a PhD from Harvard University and an MD from Washington University in St. Louis, Dr. Dutton did an internship at the University of Washington, Seattle, and his residency back at Washington University. He performed a glaucoma fellowship at Washington University and an ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery and ophthalmic oncology fellowship at the University of Iowa. He is certified in ophthalmology, ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery, and cosmetic surgery.
Dr. Dutton is particularly interested in intraocular malignant melanoma and general ophthalmic oncology, orbital implants and grafting biomaterials, ocuoloplastic reconstructive techniques, orbital diseases and imaging techniques, facial dystonias and chemodenervation, orbital functional anatomy, and evolution of vertebrate visual systems.
As a pioneer in the field of orbital reconstruction and treatment of spastic eyelid disease, Dr. Dutton’s practice covers the full scope of problems related to the eyelids and orbits. He served as a principal investigator for the national collaborative melanoma treatment trial and performs episcleral radioactive plaque therapy for treatment of intraocular melanoma.
