Julia A. McMillan, MD, FAAP is Vice Chair for Education in the Department of Pediatrics at Johns Hopkins; Director of the Residency Training Program at Hopkins Children’s; and Associate Dean for graduate medical education at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, where she is also Professor of Pediatrics and Pediatric Infectious Diseases. Dr. McMillan is the co-author of The Harriet Lane Handbook of Pediatric Antimicrobial Therapy, 2nd Edition.
Dr. McMillan received her medical degree from the State University of New York (SUNY) Health Science Center at Syracuse, where she completed her pediatric residency. She also has a graduate degree in teaching from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
Dr. McMillan has served as a member of the Committee on Infectious Diseases for the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the AAP Task Force on Terrorism. She has also served as chair of the Board of Directors of the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) and represented the ABP on the Federation of Pediatric Organizations. Dr. McMillan served for 15 years as the medical editor of the Infectious Diseases Sub-Board Examination for ABP, and she is currently a member of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education’s Review Committee for Pediatrics.
Areas of particular interest for Dr. McMillan are pediatric resident education, the pediatric residency program, medical education, and pediatric infectious diseases. Her main research topic of interest is the epidemiology of respiratory viral infection.
A widely published researcher, author, and editor, Dr. McMillan has received numerous awards, including the Alexander “Buck” Schaffer Award for Outstanding Teaching (awarded by pediatric residents), the Housestaff Council Faculty/Administrator Award (Johns Hopkins School of Medicine), and the Walter W. Tunnessen, Jr., MD Award for the Advancement of Pediatric Resident Education (Association of Pediatric Program Directors).
