Review of Orthopaedics was developed primarily because in medical school, my classmates encouraged me to develop study aids for them. We were so successful in our study groups with charts and tables and summary concept that I continued to do it when I started my orthopaedic residency. As I went through the residency, I refined this book to the point where it is now. We have nice summaries of essential concepts, essential drawings, composite drawings, tables, and we’ve got some bright people involved who are making every edition better than the one before it. The sixth edition is really something to behold.
Review of Orthopaedics was my first book and it’s the one I remain the most proud of. The book was developed to help people study for the boards and it continues to serve that market. It’s all in color, there are lots of review questions, and we have some really bright energetic authors who have contributed to this edition. In addition to the full-color graphics and a tremendous amount of new and exciting content, we also have a website that will include additional test questions, appendices, references, and a variety of information.
Essential Orthopaedics is meant to give the primary care physician an understanding of disease processes, how to manage them, how to work them up, and when to refer to a specialist. The book also gives background about the field. We thought that the best way to do all of that was to invite a primary care doctor to be an editor of the book. We also have our physician’s assistant involved, so we have all the components of the healthcare management trio involved in this book.
Mark D. Miller, MD serves as the S. Ward Casscells Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and the Head of the Division of Sports Medicine at the University of Virginia. He is recognized worldwide for his expertise in the field, and is an author of more than 100 peer-reviewed medical articles and more than a dozen textbooks, including Review of Orthopaedics, 6th Edition, Presentation, Imaging and Treatment of Common Musculoskeletal Conditions, and Essential Orthopaedics, among others.
In addition to his position at the University of Virginia, Dr. Miller is the Team Orthopedic Surgeon for James Madison University Intercollegiate Athletics. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) and he has served as a traveling international fellow for both the American Orthopaedic Association (AOA) and the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM). Among his clinical interests are sports medicine, shoulder surgery, knee ligament reconstruction, and knee replacement. He has served as Team Orthopedist for the U.S. Air Force Academy, Dallas Cowboys, Dallas Stars, and the University of Virginia.
