Mats Brittberg, MD, PhD is a renowned researcher and Associate Professor within the Cartilage Research Unit in the Department of Orthopaedics at the Institution of Clinical Sciences at the University of Gothenburg. His research focuses on cartilage repair, with emphasis on cartilage regeneration with in-vitro expanded autologous chondrocytes. Among the many publications he has authored and edited is the textbook Cartilage Surgery: An Operative Manual.
Dr. Brittberg conducts research through the European Connective Tissue Engineering Centre, which represents a collaboration between the Institution of Orthopaedics, Goteborg University, and Chalmers Technical University. He also collaborates in biotribology research with Virginia Tech. Dr. Brittberg is active in numerous societies and professional groups. He has served as vice president of the International Cartilage Repair Society and on the board of governors of the board of the Tissue Engineering Society International. Dr. Brittberg recently received the ICRS Genzyme Lifetime Achievement Award for his work in the field.
