Michael J. Aminoff, MD, DSc, FRCP is a distinguished professor in the Department of Neurology at the University of California, San Francisco. He serves as executive vice chair of neurology and director of the Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders Clinic at the UCSF Medical Center. Dr. Aminoff is the author of Aminoff’s Electrodiagnosis in Clinical Neurology, 6th Edition, which “has become known as the classic textbook of electrodiagnostic methodology” according to JAMA, The Journal of the American Medical Association.
An internationally recognized neurologist and expert in diagnosing and treating Parkinson’s disease, Dr. Aminoff focuses on particular aspects of the disease, including movement and cognitive issues such as disturbances to memory, perception and judgment. He is also involved in treating and studying epilepsy and other movement disorders.
Dr. Aminoff graduated with honors from University College in London in 1962 and from the University College Hospital Medical School in 1965. He completed post-doctoral training in London teaching hospitals. He joined UCSF Medical Center in 1974. In 2000, Dr. Aminoff was awarded a doctorate in science from the University of London. He is board certified in three specialties: electrodiagnostic medicine, clinical neurophysiology, and neurology.
In addition to authoring more than 210 original research publications and numerous books, Dr. Aminoff is the recipient of several awards. These include the Royer Award for contributions to the advancement of neurology; the Lifetime Achievement Award of the American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine; and the A.B. Baker Award of the American Academy of Neurology for lifetime achievements and contributions to medical education.
